Not far from the cities of the Triad area, off the four lane highways there's another North Carolina waiting to be discovered with it's sheer cliffs and peaks of bare rock, quiet forests and cascading waterfalls. Let's not forget about the views of the piedmont plateau that stretch for miles.

We're talking about Hanging Rock State Park!

Did you know that Hanging Rock State Park was created all the way back in the 1930s? It actually was part of a Civilian Conservation Corps project!

Since then, this popular North Carolina state park has offered amazing traditional outdoor experiences for families just like yours!

You can enjoy the 73 site campground if you want to turn your family day out into something much more adventurous, or you might want to just relax with a picnic on the grounds.

Need to cool off? Those summer months can get pretty hot! That's why Hanging Rock State Park is great for swimming too, and they also offer canoe rentals if you don't fancy getting quite so wet!

For those active folk in the family, Hanging Rock State Park offer over 20 miles of amazing hiking trails that climb onto spectacular views, and weave along waterfalls and streams.

It also allows access to the Dan River for paddling, as well as nearly 9 miles of mountain biking trails and rock climbing, if you have a permit.

Phew! We're exhausted just thinking about it!

If you want an even longer stay, they offer vacation cabins too.

The park also offer free interpretive programs that complement the education of the park museum, where kids can explore the natural and cultural history of the Sauratown Mountains.

Hanging Rock State Park FAQ’s

There is a concession stand that is open weekends in spring and fall (10am - 5:30pm) and daily during the summer months

No private boats are allowed on the park lake. Canoes and rowboats may be rented when the lake facilities are open. Canoes accommodate up to 2 people, and rowboats accommodate up to 3 people. Rental fees are $5 per hour.

Why not bring your own healthy picnic! There are picnic spots, and don't forget your bottled water!

Anyone over 16 years old must have a NC fishing license. All North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission fishing regulations are enforced.
