About this activity

All aboard for rail adventure! The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad takes you through a remote corner of western North Carolina into river gorges, across fertile valleys and through tunnels carved out of mountains. The Nantahala Gorge Excursion carries you to the Nantahala Gorge and back again. There is a one hour layover at the Nantahala Outdoor Center for sightseeing and a picnic lunch by the river. The Tuckasegee River Excursion travels along the Tuckasegee River through the historic Cowee Tunnel and passes the movie The Fugitive train wreck. The trip includes a 1 ½ hour layover in the town of Dillsboro. You don’t want to miss our special events: The Lone Ranger™ May 23 & 24, 30 & 31, Day Out with Thomas™ July 24-28 & July 30-August 2, special 25 minute rides, PEANUTS™ The Great Pumpkin Patch Express October 2-25; Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays only, The Polar Express™ November 6-December 23, special 1 hour 15 minute rides.

Great Smoky Mountains Railroad is conveniently located just 3 hours from Atlanta, 2 hours from Knoxville or Gatlinburg, 1 hour from Asheville and right in the middle of some of the best rafting and outdoor adventure in the country. The south side of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is just a short scenic drive from the railroad and the Cherokee Indian Reservation and Harrah's Casino are located just 15 minutes away.
