Fort Verde State Historic Park is the best preserved example of an Indian Wars period fort in Arizona. Spanning from 1865 through 1890 Camp Lincoln, Camp Verde and finally Fort Verde were home to officers, doctors, families, enlisted men, and scouts. Fort Verde was the primary base for General George Crook's U.S. Army scouts and soldiers.

My g-great-grandparents with their children arrived in Camp Verde on a wagon train Aug. 23, 1875, so I was excited to see the place where their daughter was married and my grandfather was born in 1877. It took them 3 months and 20 days after leaving Missouri to reach Camp Verde. I purchased a book at the fort that actually had their name in it! The guide at the camp was very helpful. I also visited Montezuma's Castle, which is nearby.
