Where are we going today?
Fort Croghan was established in 1849, the third of the first four forts established by the United States government to protect the settlements on the edge of the frontier from hostile Indians. From 1849 to its decommission in 1853, Fort Croghan was the home of Company C, 8th Infantry (mounted), USA and eventually became the headquarters of the Second Dragoon Regiment.
Today Fort Croghan is representative of the early days of what was to become Burnet, Texas. Come visit us. See the sights and imagine the sounds of the frontier as you visit the blacksmith shop, the one room schoolhouse, the powder house, the stage stop and the log cabins The Museum contains over 1200 artifacts from in and around Burnet, Texas.

Teachers: Fort Croghan is a good way to demonstrate Texas history to your children as it was in the 1800's. With prior appointments, we give guided tours to public, private and home school children. We will even give tours when we are not officially open, but require adequate time to get volunteers to help with the children. .
