Now that they did groupons and living social they pack the boat overfull. They also state that they are booked 3 months out and cannot run a second boat! Then the boat says max load 77 and we push off with 85! what the hell! I know this is a management issue and not the crew.. The Crew was awesome as always and did an outstanding job keeping everyone fishing and untangled. The worst part was that we actually got on some good fish and we were almost out of bait! what can you not afford enough bait with 85 people on board!!?? I will not be on that...Read More

I purchased a 3/4 day pass for my husband for Davey's Locker and the experience he had was one big rip-off. When he called to make a reservation, he was told that for $15 more he could take a boat with limited anglers, no more than 32. He was told the boat left at 6:30. He arrived at 6:00 and got in line for the boat. It turned out, the boat he had paid extra money for actually left at 5:30. When he questioned the people in the office about the $15 extra he had paid, he was told it was a "fuel" charge. The boat he was on was loaded with around 79...Read More

Went yesterday (7/30/2014) on a extended 3/4 day "limited" trip where they keep the number of anglers lower. Seemed like at least 5 people on the boat were friends of the crew (not sure if they were in addition to the 50 anglers or not. This was our second attempt this year, as we first went in April but were given 50% off coupons because they weren't able to get any bait other than frozen squid so they called it short. Unfortunately they wouldn't let us use the 50% off coupon for this trip because of the "limited" status.

At least half of my party were first timers, and a couple of others only 2nd or 3rd timers, and they all had a great time. If you’re one of those people that puts a lot of weight on the reviews that you read, keep in mind that for every one negative review, there are at least 100 satisfied customers that don’t take the time to write a review. I know - - I own a business myself. If customers don’t have a flawless or PERFECT experience, then people are MORE than ready to write a negative review. If everything goes smoothly, then people don’t write a review. The guys that work on these boats are overworked and underpaid, but they do what they do because they love what they do. The crew on this particular trip worked their fannies off. For the reviewer(s) that calculate how much each fish cost on their trip - - (“that’s $50 per fish”) - - next time, just go to the grocery store and buy your fish in a little styrofoam container. You’ll save yourself and the crew a lot of grief. Do you go to Disneyland in the middle of the summer and calculate how much each ride is costing you ? Especially after you have to wait 1 ½ hours for each ride? If this is you, then you should stay home and play video games. I’ll take a crowded party boat anytime, given the choice.
Was the trip totally glitch free? No - - I had to wait a little too long for my hamburger from the galley. The chef/deckhand was also trying to keep about 20 other people ordering food happy at the same. Do I plan to write 6 paragraphs on how upset I was that I had to wait for my burger? I think not.
Yes, the boat was full. If everyone paid the “groupon” or “living social” price, like we did, the boat would barely break even, even with 40 or 50 people on the boat. It’s a business. They need to keep it “afloat” (in more ways than one!) I’d much rather take my family on a ¾ or full day trip, but I ain’t made of money, ya know?!? So we bought the “Living Social” deal and still had a great time!!
So - - if you had a good time on the boat, write a nice review! If you have an issue with something, tell the crew or the landing BEFORE you put all your derogatory comments on the internet! With this landing, like most other businesses, they will try to resolve your issues to the best of their ability. We’re all human, after all.
In the meantime, KEEP ON FISHING!

BOOOOOOOOO.. Also, girl at the front desk was a pain. And they charged me 15 bucks for a fuel surcharge, when the sign clearly says $8 they said it was because it was an extended 3\4 day! $7 for 4 more hours! avoid this place. but if you go hang out with a deck hand, they are way cool and try their best.. its not their fault the management sux

Also, when he asked other anglers on the boat if they paid the extra $15 they said they had not. Unfortunately, my husband was given two more days of fishing with Davey's Locker as gifts. When they are used up, he will be going somewhere else for his fishing trips.

On the positive side, the crew were great and worked really hard to help the anglers catch and keep their fish.

Fishing was supposed to be great because of the El Nino waters and they have been consistently posting excellent fish reports. Unfortunately this wasn't the case. This time they only got anchovies (minnows) and couldn't get sardines which they wanted to catch tuna (the goal of this offshore trip) and still the frozen squid. They also suggested you buy a lure upon check in because they said it was the one that was working.
We spent hours of driving from spot to spot while spending very little time actually fishing. Each time we hit a spot they would wait a couple of minutes and say "reel them up" because nothing was biting. Might have been the lack of appropriate bait? Not sure but everyone was complaining about the lack of actual fishing time versus travel.
At the end of the trip they tried close to the shore down below Laguna Beach at a large kelp area just some people could catch something. Mainly mackerel were hitting with a couple of bonita and calico bass. Quite a few of the bonita were brought up by the employees or friends. I think the cook even caught a couple.
Fish count is largely suspect. They show one blue fin tuna (true) it was caught on the troller line they set up. One calico bass ( I saw a few brought up but probably correct because of size they kept it). And 55 bonita ? This one has me stumped. I saw a few caught but they were mostly mackerel at the end of the day. Unless mackerel count as bonita, I'm not buying it.
Regardless of the count issue, I'm not going back but instead trying another company next time.
