Moncur Gallery displays a collection of pre-European contact native artifacts, most collected by inspired amateur archaeologist William Moncur. The collection has took a lifetime to gather and showcases the great esteem that Bill has for the history of his hometown and the community too!
It's a unique and wonderful experience of discovery for people of all ages and there's over 12,000 years of artifacts in the turtle mountains too. The People of the Plains exhibit displays artifacts that have been donated by other archaeologists which has expanded the original collection.
The exhibit focuses on pre-contact First Nations artifacts that reveal the activities of daily life. Including cooking, food prep, hunting, games and much more. You can also head out on a tour which shows the rise of the Metis culture in the area from the combination of First Nations and European traditions.
Explore the animals that once inhabited the area, with rare mammoth fossil displays and bison skeleten. Learn all about the prairies and how they adapted along the way as the world changed.
There are both guided and interactive audio tours available, or you can head out on your own if you wanted to explore yourself as there are written displays which will help you explore. There is a mini archaeological “dig pit” is provided as well, where guests have the chance to find stone and bone artifacts
