About this activity

Only just south of Owen Sound, the Grey Roots Museum & Archives is a great place to teach kids all about the unique history of Grey County - after all, history happens everywhere! This award-winning museum features a number of exhibits, each of which cover a different theme. Grey County itself was established in 1852, so there already is a lot of history to be learnt there!

There are stories of the 19th and 20th century waiting to be heard, and original and touring exhibits all on the people and settlements of the area. There are even some special exhibits too!

Examples of exhibits are fascinating! Kids can look at reproductions of Tutankhamun's treasures, or look at the models of Sound Harbour in 1910 with all the arrivals of the ships! There have been exhibits of the first settler's early days, and the fascinating world of prohibition.

Kids might even be able to explore the roots of the military history from as early as 1861! There have been exhibits on robots, and dinosaurs, and even the circus! The exhibits last for a while, so check what's on before you go to make sure you don't miss out!

Grey Roots Museum & Archives also have virtual exhibits on the first non-Native settlers, as well as the black community, and great hands-on exhibits for kids where they can look at the Print Shop - which is how they communicated before the internet, TV, radio or phone!

Don't miss the fun events that the museum held throughout the year, with some seasonal events too!

Kids will love reading all about history that has happened right under their feet - and then the world! What will you learn today!
