Grasslands National Park is the first national park of Canada to preserve a portion of the mixed prairie grasslands. Eavesdrop on a prairie dog town or learn about how Sitting Bull took refuge here after the battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876. Guided hikes, interpretive trails, bird watching, and nature photography are popular activities in Grasslands.
Experience the solitude of the wide-open plains, stargaze whilst sitting beside a campfire and ride a traditional wagon. There's so much to do at the park for the whole family. You can go back in time and explore the dinosaur bones and even catch a glimpse of a prairie homestead on the horizon!
There are lots of interpretive, family-friendly walks and trails, and lots of seasonal events throughout the year to get involved in. If you want to camp, there's lots of options to choose from, whether it's an RV or a TENTik. You'll also find kayaking, cycling, mountain biking and lots more adventurous outdoor activities to get involved with.
The West Block is accessible from the town of Val Marie (site of the park’s visitor centre), which can be reached by Highway 4 and Highway 18. The East Block is accessible from Highway 18, south of Wood Mountain. The blocks are approximately a 2 hour drive apart.
