About this activity

Are you ready to step back in time...all the way back to the 17th century? Can you even imagine what it would be like to live back then! Well, at the Colony of Avalon, you don't have to imagine it because you will be experiencing it!

At the Colony of Avalon, you can immerse yourselves in history, and those little history buffs will love all the things they can do to bring it all to life! Maybe you want to walk down a 17th century street? Or explore a 17th century herb garden? How different do you think they would be to streets and gardens that you know today? (Pretty different we imagine!)

It's a great way to look at the daily life of one of the earliest European colonies that ever settled in North America!

Have you heard of Lord Baltimore? We thought so! Well, his name was George Calvert, and actually founded the colony all the way back in 1621. This settlement was eventually forgotten, so all of the remains were undisturbed for centuries! Lucky for you, because now you get to see it all for yourself!

The Colony of Avalon is being excavated currently, and those clever archaeologists have uncovered over....are you ready...a MILLION artifacts from the site, including gold rings, ceramics from Portugal and a host of other unusual objects.

The Interpretation Centre is a great place to start your visit, with those amazing artifacts that you can check out, from keys, clay pipes, and even a grave stone!

The dig area consists of six sites which have uncovered remains in them, and there is even a Conservation Laboratory where you can piece together the history yourself!

Pretty amazing! No need for a time machine, just the Colony of Avalon!
