About this activity

The Chatham-Kent Black Historical Society's collection of local artifacts, genealogical information and general research materials is located in the Heritage Room at the W.I.S.H. Centre. The Heritage Room provides visitors with the history of Chatham's Black Community after escaping slavery. Their achievements and their struggles are chronicled through dramatizations, slide presentations and videos.

The museum is dedicated to the perservation and promotion of the history of the Chatham-Kent's Black Community and their influence across North America. It shares the legacy of the black men and women who helped buid the city and towns and keep their in Canadian history alive.

Each tour of the museum includes a walking tour of the neighbourhood, weather permitting. See the John Brown Meeting House, picture the places where the community built schools when they faces segregation and walk the streets that many of the best and brightest black community members called home. One of the stops is the BME Freefrom Park and has been transformed into a green space for education and enjoyments. The focal point is a bronze state of Mary Ann Shadd Cary and is a great stop for a walk when the weather is nice.
