About this activity

Have you ever visited the birthplace of a national hero? If you haven't, then head to Bethune Memorial House National Historic Site!

This historic home commemorates the achievements of Dr. Henry Norman Bethune. It was during the early 20th century Dr. Bethune became a medial pioneer. He was impatient and restless, and was inspired by his love of the outdoors and duty to others.

Eventually, he became an advocate for the country's universal health care system, and was even a revered Chinese cultural icon.

Now, the doors are open and you can take a tour of his beautiful Victorian-era home, as well as an informative visitors center that can teach you all about the life of this influential man. The site explores the roots of his legacy, and showcases the reasons he became a hero.

During the last two years of his life, he spent in China as a teacher and a surgeon, and since his notoriety around that time, has since gone on to be a great example of selfless humanitarianism to millions of Chinese students.

As well as exploring the life of an icon, the Bethune Memorial House also gives you a chance to look at how life would have been in the early 20th century. There are medical artifacts, personal diaries, and multimedia displays all showcasing life over a century ago.

A historical and educational experience for the whole family in Ontario!
