About this activity
The Goldrush Days are some of the most iconic in Australian history, and at Sovereign Hill the whole family can immerse themselves in the story! Sovereign Hill is Australia's foremost outdoor museum, and actually re-creates the first ten years in Ballarat after the first discovery of gold.
Kids - do you know when that was? Well, it was all the way back in 1851, and if you didn't know that, then that's all the more reason to visit - so you can learn all these fun facts!
During the day, Sovereign Hill lets you step right back into history, and experience the hustle and bustle of Main Street. You can interact with costumed men and women as they parade around their new-found wealth (it rose very quickly when they hit their fortunes!), and you can even pan for gold yourself and try and find your OWN fortune!
During the evening, they put on an amazing sound and light show that tells the story of the 1854 Eureka Uprising. See - even the light show lets you keep learning!
There are SO many things to do with kids at this historic attraction. You can see an incredible $100,000 gold pour, or venture underground as part of a fully-guided mine tour. There is a fascinating Gold Museum, or you can enjoy a horse-drawn coach and check out the time!
Fancy some shopping? You can 1850's style! There are hotels to visits, and schools to experience (we bet they are quite different to what you are used to now!)
Sovereign Hill is also a great way to see the different trades people would have had - from candlemakers, wheelwrights and confectioners!
