About this activity

All aboard shipmates, because it's time to explore the OLDEST nautical collection in the entire country!

The South Australia Maritime Museum actually has a collection that began all the way back in 1872, and now preserves what is the oldest collection in Australia - pretty awesome!

It's a place that preserves, explores, and celebrates the history of our oceans and rivers, and those people behind the adventures, challenges and successes.

The South Australian Maritime Museum has a number of changing, and permanent galleries, which are suitable for all ages - and will educate as well as fascinate!

The permanent exhibitions that are showcased at the museum cover a whole range of topics.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to leave your home for the other side of the world, a whole 175 years ago? You can re-live the extraordinary journey that these 546 across 9 ships would have encountered. The stories are told from their own words - through letters, journals and diaries, as well as objects brought with them. Can you imagine how different Australia would be if we didn't have these settlers? Imagine what it would have been like arriving in a new country!

If you just LOVE history and want to go back even further, the First Voyages exhibition charts a history from explorers like Ptolemy, to when the first complete map of Australia was finished.

Kids can learn all about River Pod Dolphins, and even check out all the shipwrecks that have occurred in the Southern Seas.

You can even visit the Port Adelaide Lighthouse - Adelaide's iron lighthouse that was first lit in 1869. Amazing history to learn about!

Something else that's fun in the SA Maritime Museum, is it's a chance to search back through previous generations, and the 250,000 passengers who arrived in the state between 1836 and 1961. Maybe you will discover family members you didn't know about!

All aboard - it's time to man the sails, because we're off for some maritime fun!
