About this activity

Where would we be without electricity? It's a scary thought, isn't it! Well, it was discovered at some point, and the Powerstation Museum in Tamworth is the best place for the family to understand all things electricity! A fascinating family day out! The Powerstation Museum opened up in 1988 - which means there have been a LOT of families learning lots of amazing facts since then!

The museum is filled with displays that have recorded the history of electricity. You can see items reflecting the impact that electricity has had on our modern society.

A HUGE impact...otherwise we would still be walking around with candles and moonlight!

The museum has very cool special working displays, which include a generator, which demonstrate the principles of the science behind electricity.

There is even an installation of the first working electric telegraph...which was actually the FIRST practical use of electricity. That's pretty cool!

There are several exhibitions that you can walk around which display early electrical appliances. These would have been used for cooling, entertainment, washing, cleaning...and much different to what you would be used to these days!

Did you know that Tamworth was actually the first town in Australia that was lit by electricity? Yep! All the way back in 1888, only 9 years after the incandescent electric light bulb was invented. Did you know it was Joseph Wilson Swan who invented it, and he was British?

All these facts you are learning, and you haven't set foot in the Powerstation Museum yet!

A fascinating and fact filled day out with the family in Tamworth...all powered by electricity!
