Where are we going today?

Have you ever had a day where you and your family can't decide whether to head to an animal-tastic zoo for the day, or a fun adventure inside the ocean at the aquarium?

We have a solution! The National Zoo and Aquarium is Australia's only combined Zoo and Aquarium! That's your two adventures all in the same place!

Kids will love exploring the 7 hectares of land which is conveniently just five minutes from the centre of Canberra. They have native animals, as well as the very exotic from all over the world.

Want to hear something else impressive? They have the largest inland saltwater tank in the country! Pretty amazing!

Have a casual stroll, or make a full day of it with the family (there is plenty to do to fill a whole day!), especially with their BBQ facilities and picnic areas.

Kids will get a kick out of joining the animal encounters, where they get an up close experience with some of the worlds most amazing creatures!

There are even special hand feeding opportunities on weekends and during holidays. No need to book, just make sure you keep an eye on the time and make sure you're in the area!

Ever wanted to hand feed a tiger? (Sorry, excuse us...a TIGER!?) Yep! For an extra fee to your admission, the National Zoo and Aquarium offer Zooventure Tours where you can have a 100kg tiger leap up on the fence and take the meat right from your hand! Or have a lion roar only inches from your face (how is his breath!?). Maybe you want to have a Brown Bear lick honey right off your hand! These are the most hands-on animal encounters in the entire country.

So for all those kids over 12 who want the experience of a lifetime, check it out!

And how could we forget the aquarium! After all is is the National Zoo AND Aquarium! Here you can get close to the amazing reef sharks in their Shark Pier, and even hand feed the Tawny Nurse Shark as part of their daily animal encounters (check out what other encounters they have when you arrive so you can plan your day around it!)

Kids can learn about the Great Barrier Reef, as well as the creatures in the Southern Ocean. Weekends and school holidays you can be part of the Keeper Talks and meet and greet and alligator or a snake! Yikes!

A zoo AND and an aquarium in one? Yes please!

I'm Hungry!

Picnic areas and complimentary BBQ facilities are available so bring your own food and enjoy a nice family lunch!.

Doing our bit

The National Zoo and Aquarium is contributing heavily to a large number of breeding programs that can help save a number of animals from extinction. It's worth making sure the kids learn about various animals near extinction and how this has happened, and what the world is doing to try and save them. .

A wheelchair and motorised scooter is available for hire but prior bookings are recommended..

Can I get one of those?

Of course there is a gift shop where you can get fun gifts for you to be reminded of your day out! Perhaps you can get a little keepsake of your favourite animal?.

More information

You can celebrate with the animals with their Safari Birthday Tour! What a way to celebrate! .

Absolute trash of a zoo, i would not recommend this to any friends or family. Taronga zoo, wildlife park, featherdale and even koala park are hundreds of times better than this trash. The zoo itself is very unorganized, has limited staff and the animals were always in hiding. I still laugh at the sentence that one of the zoo keepers said during the tiger talk, "You won't be able to see the tigers because they are hiding in their dens directly underneath us". Plenty of space in the zoo itself but very bad management of it, walking around the zoo...Read More

Spent two absolutely amazing days at this fabulous zoo. On the first day I joined in the Zooventure tour and had an absolute ball. I got to feed the European brown bear, Sumatran tiger, cougar, giraffe, common eland, white lion and oriental small clawed otters, while also getting the chance to get up close with and pat the dingo, and even have a boa constrictor hang around the back of my neck and over my shoulders and arms. On the second day I participated in the "Meet a cheetah" experience, whoa! what a mind blowing experience that was. Kneeling...Read More

Pretty good zoo, and improving all the time. Sadly, they're still missing some of the big name draw cards like Elephants.

If you can afford one of the tours I highly recommend them.

What a day. Best zoo ever. Staff all go extra mile, animals we'll cared for and enclosures are large and beautifully kept. Prices are very reasonable and not over crowded. We had a personal feed of a tiger for a third of the price of other zoos. A must see! New open range opening in April. Definitely coming back ASAP!

My daughter and I had the most amazing day at the National Zoo in Canberra.
We arrived just before 10:30am and left just before 6pm - it was a jam packed day. Getting up close and personal with a couple of big cats in the Cheetah Experience was beyond our expectations and will be a lifelong memory. We also did the Zooventure Tour where we were taken behind the scenes (to areas not open to the public) and hand fed a big brown bear, the white lions, the Sumatran tiger, the Giraffe among others. We also had a very tight cuddle from the Boa Constrictor.

Plenty of space in the zoo itself but very bad management of it, walking around the zoo was a hassle on it's own with many paths leading to nowhere, unauthorized areas and misleading signs. Half of the animals in the zoo were not even worth looking at, things you could generally find in your backyard. Talk shows were absolute garbage, nothing informative and the animals were very disobedient.
We were also expecting a full sized aquarium but what they call "aquarium" is nothing short of what can be displayed in a house. Been there once never going back.

Kneeling beside a fully grown cheetah, and patting it from it's head down along its back, while hearing that loud purr.....UNBELIEVABLE!!! Also having a cheetah lick my hand, and feeling its soft, beautiful coat between my fingers, was an experience I don't think I'll ever forget, let alone be able to top. If you get the opportunity to go to this zoo and participate in one of the experiences, you'll be grinning from ear to ear.

We were disappointed the Aquarium section was closed for renovations but we can highly recommend a visit and partake in the extracurricular activities. Definitely a once in a lifetime experience!!
