About this activity

Kids, do you want to spend the day with your family running along the white sandy beaches, or perhaps you want to try and spot some of the wildlife hiding in the Australian bush?

Freycinet National Park is a great place to go if you're in Tasmania for a true nature-based experience.

There are a ton of activities that will keep the whole family entertained, no matter what the age! Grab those walking shoes and head along the trails to Wineglass Bay, or just take a walk along the beach. If you're really adventurous there is a three day walk right across the length of the Freycinet Peninsula!

Little bit too hot (well, it is Australia!) - grab those swimmers and head on down to the water and enjoy some swimming. If you're in Sleepy Bay, it's a great place for snorkelling or diving, checking out all the incredible marine life in the area! If you have kids that are new to the ocean or snorkelling, Honeymoon Bay is a better place for them to start as it's sheltered.

They will also love the rock pools at both those bays, as well as at Ranger Creek. Just remind them to not disturb the little sea creatures that live in the rock pools are they are very fragile and they are comfortable in their homes!

If you want to keep your feet dry, there are plenty of places to try and spot the rest of the wildlife that calls the Freycinet National Park home.

The visitor centre in the park is a great place to start, as it introduces the cultural and natural heritage of the region through creative displays that kids will easily understand, and hopefully encourage them to ask questions about what they are about to see.

If you fancy extending your day out, they also offer camping in the summer month however it's such a popular activity they work out of a ballot system. Good luck!

Don't forget if you have your car there are some lovely drives too!

Enjoy!

Directions

The park is about 2.5 to 3 hours from Hobart or Launceston. If you are no the Tasman Hwy (A3), turn onto the Coles Bay Road (C302) which is about 12km south of Bicheno. The main park entrance is just after Coles Bay townships, which is about 30km from the hwy on a good sealed road. Just be careful between sunset and sunrise because you are sharing the road with the wildlife - so drive slow and keep an eye out!

Freycinet National Park FAQ’s

Electric barbecues, picnic tables, water and toilets are located at Honeymoon Bay and Ranger Creek so why not bring your own lunch and enjoy it in the incredible Tasmanian countryside!

Camping is extremely popular over the summer months and at Easter. Due to the high demand for campsites, a ballot system operates from the 18th December until the 10th February and for Easter each year. The ballot is drawn early August with successful applicants being notified by mail. This does mean you have to plan ahead. Good luck!

If you are in the visitor centre you'll notice the shop which sells a host of products including posters, film, clothing, postcards - and if the kids just love learning about the park, there are a number of natural history books available too!

What a great place for kids to learn about wildlife and ecology! Educational groups may be issued an exemption following prior application to the Ranger in Charge, provided the school excursion is for educational purposes. They also have a theatre available throughout the year for school groups.

The visitor centre at the entrance is fully accessible and there's a 10-minute, wheelchair accessible circuit track starting next to the centre. There's also accessible sites and shower block next to the car park.
