About this activity

Did you ever think that for your family day out, you'd be off to prison? The good news is, you only have to stay as long as you like! Unlike the prisoners that would have called it home...but you can find out all about them when you visit Fremantle Prison!

Fremantle Prison is one of WA's most significant and fascinating culture sites. It's also part of the World Heritage List - which means it's pretty special!

You can explore Fremantle Prison through guided tours, which will give you a real insight into the horrors that the convicts would have faced. You can also hear the legends of cunning escapes, and those brave little prison explorers in the family can actually explore the tunnels which lie a whopping 20 feet below the prison floor!

Fremantle Prison is set on 6 hectares, and you can explore the range of buildings that are on the grounds, from the prison itself, to the gatehouse, cottages, tunnels, and walls, and you can even get to check out some pretty amazing items, such as prisoner art.

There is a commentary along the way which will give you all the facts and history that you need to know, to ensure your visit is not only fascinating, but educational too!

There are a range of tours that you can choose from - from Doing Time Tour, to the Great Escapes Tour.

The day tours are fun and interesting for the little kids, but if you have older, and slightly more brave, kids in the family, you might want to check out the night tours by torchlight. Then, the subject of shadows and ghosts might arise...spooky!

Don't worry - you will be allowed to leave at the end of your stay!
