About this activity

Kids, you know you want to get off the couch, turn that television off and enjoy nature! What better place to do it than in the heart of the beautiful Dandenong Ranges at Emerald Lake Park.

It's only an hours drive east of Melbourne, so this park is a great day trip from the city.

Emerald Lake Park is much more than a park though. Were you thinking small play sets, some grass and picnic tables? Guess again!

How about taking a ride on the iconic Puffing Billy? That's right - a train ride!

There is even the Emerald Lake Model Railway which is a must-see for those train loving kids, because it's the largest working scale model in the Southern Hemisphere! There is also a viewing area larger than the average Australian house - now that's impressive!

The model railway is also an interactive display. Kids will love all the buttons to press, as well as the trains to watch, and fascinating miniatures living in towns, city and country! This little world consists of more than 2,000 metres of track and includes 250 houses and buildings, 450 cars and trucks, 1,100 trees and 1,500 miniature people.

There are also scenic walking trails which you can enjoy a few hours exploring, or get out on the river and enjoy some paddle boats or even relax with some fishing. Always something for everyone!

Parents, you will be happy to know that not only the park is super fun for kids, and a great place for them to keep active, but it's also a park where kids can learn! The Emerald Lake Park Environment Centre offers interesting and detailed information about the parks history, the features of the park, as well as facts about the native fauna and flora.

Not enough? Ever think a park would have a live aquatic animals display! This one does!

So whether you are a train enthusiast, a nature lover, a wildlife spotter, or just want to enjoy a family out in the Australian country - Emerald Lake Park might just be your perfect family day out!
